Bio: My name is Mariana Garcia-Herrera, I’m the youngest, and first in my family to go to college. Transferring to UC Berkeley was one of the most stressful experiences in my life the worry of not knowing anyone, navigating the large campus, and financial issues started to boil up. I had been used to a small campus where professors and advisors were very attentive, so how was I going to survive UC Berkeley’s large campus and classes. When I discovered the sharers scholars I immediately felt the need to join, it was the solution to all my problems. The Sharer Scholars program allowed me to transition with ease because I knew that I would have a community where I could meet other transfer students like me who were also making the big transition. It also took the pressure of transferring off my shoulders, when you transfer it feels like you’re way behind other people at school, you don’t understand how to navigate the website, where the buildings are, or even what programs are available. The Sharer Scholars program was helpful with all these problems. The counselors, administrators, and speakers were a big help in understanding the many opportunities UC Berkeley had to offer, and how I could improve myself professionally to reach my career and financial goals.
